Red Velvet History

Red Velvet is a South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment in 2014. Red Velvet is also girl group five years after F(x) in 2009. At the same time, Red Velvet is the girl group under “SM Rookies” launched by SM Entertainment.

The group was initially made up of four members, Irene, Seulgi, Wendy and Joy. On August 1, 2014, they were debuted in KBS2 “Music Bank” with the digital single “Happiness”.

On March 2015, Yeri joined as a new member. Red Velvet became a five-members girl group and released their first mini-album, Ice Cream Cake.

Origin of their group name

On July 28, 2014, SM Entertainment official YouTube channel released a trailer for the new girl group, exposing the new girl group called “Red Velvet.”

Red Velvet “is a name that combines strong, glamorous color “red” with the feeling of a soft, feminine item, “Velvet”. Hope that in the future, Red Velvet will be able to show both toughness and softness, both in music and in performance, bring you a different sense of sensual enjoyment.

On April 26, 2017, the members officially announced the fan name to be “Reveluv (레베럽)” through the official Instagram. The fan name can be interpreted as “Red Velvet Luv“. Hope that fans and Red Velvet in the future can become a relationship of mutual appreciation and love.

There is also another meaning for Reveluv. Reve (rêve) in Reveluv stands for dream in French. The story behind the name is that the fans, us, make Red Velvet’s dreams come true, so in return, Red Velvet gave us their love.
